Best Friends Animal Society is guided by a simple philosophy: kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us. A grassroots effort to place dogs and cats who were considered "unadoptable" into good homes.
They are obviously an outstanding organization that has stood out to Sara for years as a must visit. Their goals are right in line with BOGO Bowl and our mission. We were thrilled to take a tour of the sanctuary in beautiful Kanab, Utah. Best Friends is the largest sanctuary in the United States with 1,700 animals and over 33,000 acres.
We had a guided bus tour of Horse Haven, Bunny House, Parrot Garden, Piggy Paradise, and Wild Friends. Our stops included Cat World and Dog Town.
In Cat World the cats ruled taking over the place and walking across beams high above us. This is Slidell she can't use her back legs and slides to get about.
The visit to Dog world let us test out our command skills on one happy dog. He was more than pleased to sit and shake for us with the reward of a treat. If anyone wants a dog able to do stunts and jump as high as can be, Kira is your girl!
More Cat World and Dogtown photos coming soon to this blog and our BOGO Bowl's Facebook page!
The breakfast session began with Lena West sharing great insights on expanding influence. Lots of great ideas flowing.
Next came more sessions... as good as the information was, for me, one of the best bits was all the canine and feline company in the room.
Today's biggest impact - and I think most would agree - was the Hero Dogs of 9/11 Video shown during the lunch break. If there was a dry eye in the house I'd be shocked and producer Kenn Bell got a much-deserved standing ovation for his work.
If you haven't seen it, find it. It's excellent storytelling, beautifully filmed, and it'll break your heart. But it will also educate you and touch you and make you want to hug your best bud.
Afterward two search & rescue handlers came to the stage to talk about the importance of these dogs, their training, their unique skills and abilities they bring to our lives.
This was the second standing ovation in the room.
Every day we find new examples of how the human experience is improved by our interactions with other species. They give us so much just by being what they are. We owe them respect and care in return.
Tomorrow you'll hear about Day 6 - our first trip to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary! Talk about respect and care!
The highlight of this day was listening to Betsy Saul, Co-founder of Petfinder.com. The great story of how everything started when she lived in a tiny apartment with a neighbor who had a lone fax machine. She would come home late each night to be greeted by rolls and rolls of sheets filled with pet information that had been faxed in. Almost everyone who worked with her in the beginnings of the company still works with her today.
She shared The Five Freedoms Of Animals with the audience:
- Freedom from hunger and thirst
- Freedom from discomfort
- Freedom from pain, injury and disease
- Freedom to express normal behavior
- Freedom from fear and distress
During the day I went to monetization, Blog Magnet and Publishing classes. The takeaways varied from increasing blog traffic to the possble give and take relationships in promotions. This dog loved it and was all ears.
We also met Wyatt from Tripawd.
End of day 2 of Blog Paws and end of day 4 for BOGO Bowl. Tomorrow brings final day of Blog Paws...!
